Quand j’ai vu qu’un album autour de Flannery O’Connor allait sortir, je voulais voir s’il existait des livres/albums de cette illustratrice en version française.

J’en ai trouvé ces deux… mais à chaque fois elle n’est responsable que pour la couverture et quelques petites images en noir et blanc à l’intérieur.

Swan Lake is a beautiful concertina book detailing a night at the Ballet. Illustrated by Californian artist Ping Zhu, we see the pristine theatre, audience and performance on one side and the back-stage bustle and nerves on the other. Based on a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, the images are not only inspired by the dramatic story but also the atmosphere of a working dance venue. Zhu illustrates the orchestra, the boxes and even the entrance hall and ticket office. Back-stage is a world away from the delicate and precise presentation of front stage – ropes and pulleys, stage hands and prop handlers, seamstresses sewing sequins, ballerinas nervously awaiting their queue, the director signalling and gesturing silently – all in all we are treated to a delightful concertina which anyone with an interest in the performing arts will immediately love.

Une visite au théâtre pour participer à cette représentation du lac des cygnes.

Pas l’album qui va me marquer plus que ça, mais une belle entrée dans son monde pictural.

Qu’est-ce que j’ai attendu cet album ! Prévu de paraître au début de l’année, la pandémie a joué un tour à plus d’une maison d’édition. Entre autre aussi à Enchanted Lion Books.

Mais voilà qu’il est là, ma patience a été récompensée… et il est tout aussi beau que je me l’avais imaginé drunken

À part les illustrations qui dégagent tout plein de charme, j’étais aussi happée par l’histoire que Amy Alznauer raconte. J’ai appris beaucoup de petits détails de la vie de Flannery O’Connor.

Quel beau moment de lecture !

En suivant les publications de Ping Zhu, je suis tombée sur cet album… mais je trouvais qu’il était aussi temps pour ouvrir le fil pour Maria Popova… en espérant toujours qu’il va y avoir des versions française pour ses livres.

Cette histoire d’escargot est en tout cas très intéressante.

Jamais un « cours de science » n’a été si passionnant. J’ai adoré.

Et n’en parlons pas des illustrations. Extra.

Un album coup de coeur !
