Maria Popova (née le 28 juillet 1984) est une écrivaine américaine d'origine bulgare de commentaires littéraires et artistiques et de critique culturelle qui a trouvé un large attrait, à la fois pour son écriture et pour la stylistique visuelle qui l'accompagne.

Elle est surtout connue pour son blog, Brain Pickings, une publication en ligne qu'elle s'est battue pour maintenir sans publicité, qui présente ses écrits sur des livres et des idées sur les arts, la philosophie, la culture et d'autres sujets.

In these pages, some of today’s most wonderful culture-makers—writers, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and philosophers—reflect on the joys of reading, how books broaden and deepen human experience, and the ways in which the written word has formed their own character. On the page facing each letter, an illustration by a celebrated illustrator or graphic artist presents that artist's visual response.
Among the diverse contributions are letters from Jane Goodall, Neil Gaiman, Jerome Bruner, Shonda Rhimes, Ursula K. Le Guin, Yo-Yo Ma, Judy Blume, Lena Dunham, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Jacqueline Woodson, as well as a ninety-eight-year-old Holocaust survivor, a pioneering oceanographer, and Italy’s first woman in space.
Some of the illustrators, cartoonists, and graphic designers involved are Marianne Dubuc, Sean Qualls, Oliver Jeffers, Maira Kalman, Mo Willems, Isabelle Arsenault, Chris Ware, Liniers, Shaun Tan, Tomi Ungerer, and Art Spiegelman.

This project is woven entirely of goodwill, generosity of spirit, and a shared love of books. Everyone involved has donated their time, and all profits will go to the New York Public Library systems.

Maria Popova écrit dans son introduction à ce livre que dans le fameux questionnaire de Marcel Proust, à la question « Mon rêve de bonheur », David Bowie avait répondu par : « Lire ».

J’espère qu’il va y avoir très bientôt une version française de ce livre…

Bon nombre des illustrateurs ont un fil sur Books… je vais partager les jours prochains au moins leurs images… en attendant une version traduite pour les textes.

Nearly every book has the same architecture — cover, spine, pages — but you open them onto worlds and gifts far beyond what paper and ink are, and on the inside they are every shape and power. Some books are toolkits you take up to fix things, from the most practical to the most mysterious, from your house to your heart, or to make things, from cakes to ships. Some books are wings. Some are horses that run away with you. Some are parties to which you are invited, full of friends who are there even when you have no friends. In some books you meet one remarkable person; in others a whole group or even a culture. Some books are medicine, bitter but clarifying. Some books are puzzles, mazes, tangles, jungles. Some long books are journeys, and at the end you are not the same person you were at the beginning. Some are handheld lights you can shine on almost anything.
The books of my childhood were bricks, not for throwing but for building. I piled the books around me for protection and withdrew inside their battlements, building a tower in which I escaped my unhappy circumstances. There I lived for many years, in love with books, taking refuge in books, learning from books a strange data-rich out-of-date version of what it means to be human. Books gave me refuge. Or I built refuge out of them, out of these books that were both bricks and magical spells, protective spells I spun around myself. They can be doorways and ships and fortresses for anyone who loves them.
And I grew up to write books, as I’d hoped, so I know that each of them is a gift a writer made for strangers, a gift I’ve given a few times and received so many times, every day since I was six.

En suivant les publications de Ping Zhu, je suis tombée sur cet album… mais je trouvais qu’il était aussi temps pour ouvrir le fil pour Maria Popova… en espérant toujours qu’il va y avoir des versions française pour ses livres.

Cette histoire d’escargot est en tout cas très intéressante.

Jamais un « cours de science » n’a été si passionnant. J’ai adoré.

Et n’en parlons pas des illustrations. Extra.

Un album coup de coeur !

Cipe Pineles a été la première femme graphiste indépendante en Amérique, la première femme membre du prestigieux Art Directors Club et la première femme intronisée au Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. Un quart de siècle s'écoulerait avant qu'une autre femme ne soit intronisée, des mois avant la mort de Pineles. Pineles a reçu à titre posthume la médaille pour l'ensemble de ses réalisations de l'American Institute of Graphic Arts, le prix Nobel de design. Et pourtant, à travers toutes ses éloges, Pineles était animée non pas par l'ego mais par une formidable générosité d'esprit. Elle considérait son succès comme n'appartenant pas à elle seule mais à toutes les femmes qu'elle gravissait avec elle, aux jeunes créateurs dont elle a façonné la vie et l'univers en tant qu'éducatrice et mentor, et au public américain, dont le goût elle s'affine subtilement et systématiquement à travers la vision sans faille qui définit l'œuvre de sa vie.
